CentOS 7是红帽（Red Hat）企业级Linux发行版RHEL 7的社区复刻版本，于2014年发布，2020年结束主流支持，2024年6月30日终止维护（EOL），内核版本3.10.x，支持XFS作为默认文件系统（最大支持500TB单文件系统），首次引入systemd（替代SysV init），统一管理进程、日志和依赖。
CentOS 8是RHEL 8的社区免费发行版，于2019年9月发布，原计划支持至2029年5月。然而，红帽（Red Hat）在2020年12月突然宣布终止传统CentOS Linux，转而推动CentOS Stream（滚动更新开发版），导致CentOS 8的支持周期大幅缩短，最终于2021年12月31日提前终止维护（EOL）。最终8系列发行版本号止步于8.5。所有centos8内核版本为4.18，这个版本是长期支持版本。因Centos8提前中止，可替代的Linux系统有Rocky Linux（由CentOS创始人发起，1:1兼容RHEL 8，支持至2029年），AlmaLinux （由CloudLinux支持，提供稳定企业级替代，支持周期与RHEL同步），Ubuntu LTS（提供5年的技术支持)，Debian Stable。
